Critical Friends for Fellowship

Through the Academic and Professional Practice Scheme, staff at UON can develop an application for Associate Fellow, Fellow or Senior Fellow through the experiential route or by participating in one of the pathways. Through this process, staff have the commitment of a critical friend for Fellowship, who is usually working within the same faculty or unit as the participant.

The role of the critical friend for fellowship:

The role of the critical friend involves the following:

  • Taking part in an initial discussion with the participant to identify their needs and what support they would like.
  • Supporting a participant in understanding what the PSF 2023 means in relation to their role and work in higher education, with a particular focus on the Descriptors and Dimensions.
  • Fostering an understanding of the relevant assessment tasks and planning how to approach them in relation to their role and experience.

How are critical friends assigned?

Critical friends are assigned in the following way:

  • A member of staff (participant) can find out about who the critical friends are in their faculty. A participant can then approach one of these critical friends (e.g. by sending an email).
  • If the critical friend, who is approached, is not able to take on this role for the participant at the current time (e.g. due to existing commitments), then the participant can contact Learning and Teaching Enhancement (LTE@northampton.ac.uk) who will help by identifying a critical friend who can support the participant.

Further guidance

There is Guidance on the Critical Friend Role for both critical friends and individuals applying for a category of Fellowship.
