Guidance on UMF compliant standard written assessment weightings across various credit modules

Throughout the 2017 UMF review of assessments, guidance on assessment volume was provided related to the maximum limits for standard written assessments based on a 20 credit module. Since the original review, through periodic review and redesign of assessments, and more recently the changes to assessments as a result of semesterisation, there were a noticeable increase in requests to clarify wordcounts for specific percentage weightings across the varied range of credit modules within the UON Module catalogue.

The table below presents the maximum word counts for a standard written assessment within a standard undergraduate and postgraduate (non-principle) modules. As the UMF requires that 25% of module hours are devoted to assessment activity, the table also shows the amount of student effort from the total number of module hours that the student should take to be able to complete the assessment.

Principal modules (see 6.2) such as final year Dissertation or Project modules are treated differently due to the additional workload expected of a student (project planning, research activities etc) and are therefore based on the following calculation:

  • Undergraduate 20 credit 5,000 words
  • Undergraduate 40 credits 10,000 words
  • Postgraduate 50/60 credits 15-20,000 words
  • MRes (Science) 20,000 words
  • MRes (Soc Sci, Edu, Business, Arts & Humanities) 30,000 word
