Postgraduate research funding

Studentships, scholarships, loans and other funding to help you pay for your studies and research.

The University is committed to supporting postgraduate research students, and all our PhD and MPhil programmes are available to study full-time and part-time. Funding can be a concern for prospective students and the University is able to offer a wide range of scholarships and bursaries thanks to the generous support from charities, partners and individuals. To find out more, visit Bursaries, scholarships and awards.

If you need funding towards your tuition fees and living costs, you may be eligible to receive Government funding which can include student finance loans, disabled students allowance and childcare support. Visit funding your study for details.

PhD studentships

Funded PhD Studentships related to specific projects are advertised from time to time throughout the year.  Speak to your subject lead or faculty research lead for more information on these. Make sure to read the criteria carefully as some PhD schemes involve applying directly for advertised projects, while others will require you to develop a research proposal alongside a supervisory team.

The PhD studentship covers costs including fees, maintenance grants, travel and subsistence.

Alternative Funding Sources

Charities, foundations and trusts can make awards for fees, maintenance or costs for postgraduate research that supports their wider goals. The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding is an online resource that helps you explore alternative sources of funding. It contains a database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance and tools to help you prepare a grant application. The guide is free for all University students and staff.
