Extra features include:-

  • Application integration with Funding Institutional
  • Dashboard overview of your funding opportunities, milestones and projects

  • Database reporting tools to create specifically designed reports

To help staff with the introduction of this new Award system, virtual training sessions will take place at the end of June and early July. Sign up for one of these dates here

Unable to make these sessions? Drop us an email and we can organise a 1:1 or small group session.

Important note: Please ensure your proposals are added to Gateway Haplo for approval by Thursday, 25th June to allow time to go through the approval cycle. Proposals after this date can be added to the new system on 1st July.

2020 Diamond Research Awards

Message from Dawn Hibbert, Head of Research Support (Library and Learning Services)

Tuesday, 18th February was our second annual Diamond Research Awards night where we celebrated the research and researchers at our University.  We were all inspired by the 5-minute showcasing of research undertaken in each of the faculties and some of our institutes.  I decided that I’d like to either be Claire or Kimberley’s research assistant, but apparently I am not allowed to give up my day job… Something about the REF and Pure… The evening was compered by John Rose from Radio Northampton, who ensured that the evening ran smoothly, despite the crackling lights!

We were presented with the premier viewing of Anthony Stepniak’s Chancellor Award Funded fourth video, about ‘The Benefits of Doing A Research Degree’… I thought momentarily about undertaking one, but felt it may be too “challenging” at present!  The short video will be released in the near future, and is a great tool for encouraging future students to take up the challenge of undertaking doctorate studies.

All our nominees were worthy of awards, but apparently the budget doesn’t stretch that far, so those that walked away with awards on the night were:

  • Excellence in Doctoral Supervision – Dr Amin Hosseinian-Far, Senior Lecturer in Business Systems & Operations and Professor Chris Roe, Professor of Psychology
  • Excellence in Research Mentorship – Dr Kathleen Mortimer, Senior Lecturer in Business
  • Research Impact – Dr Paul Jackson, Senior Lecturer in History
  • Public Industry/Engagement – Dr Callum Cooper, Lecturer in Psychology
  • Early Career Researcher – Dr Declan Ryan, Lecturer in Exercise Physiology
  • Pure Engagement – Institute for Social Innovation & Impact

Congratulations to all our awardees and to those who were nominated.  The research being done at the University of Northampton continues to be developed and makes an impact on Northampton and beyond.  Our staff continue to mentor and supervise others, bringing out the very best in our researchers.

The research support team continues to work behind the scenes to increase the visibility of our research outputs.  In 2019 research outputs from the University were downloaded from 209 countries, including Senegal, Bahrain and Turkmenistan!  Including downloads from keen academics, research support staff checking copyright and students eager to read their supervisors research, 80931 research outputs were downloaded in 2019!

Many thanks must also go to our Dean of Research, Impact and Innovation, Dr Cathy Smith who continues to work to enhance and drive forward the research of the University.

Exciting News on GRANTfinder “The Knowledge Exchange”

We have some exciting news to share from GRANTfinder with the introduction of their new service, The Knowledge Exchange. Launched over 40 years ago, this service has been supporting clients including universities, private sector consultancies, think tanks and charities for many years.

This premium research and policy service has replaced POLICYfinder allowing you to search over 200,000 policy-related resources, including extensive coverage of reviews, research and white papers. It offers a range of policy insight tools and intelligence to aid you in your research. You can also set yourself up to receive regular member-only briefings and alerts on topical policy issues.

The Knowledge Exchange will help you to understand the wider policy context which is influencing the funding environment, and how projects relate to local, regional and national policy. Read more here

This new “bigger and better” service is available to all existing GRANTfinder users. Register here to use this service and a take a look at this handy short video if you need more guidance. Once registered, the RIFS team will approve your request to gain access to the site. We have plenty of User Guide videos to help you become familiar with the site and help create powerful searches, drop us an email for more information.

What happens when I submit my proposal on Gateway?

Once you’ve added all the necessary information to Gateway, you’ll be able to submit it in to the approval workflow. This system means that the key people in the approval process (your Faculty accountant and Dean) are able to view all the information you’ve provided . In some cases, you might be required to provide more information so that they are able to fully understand the ins and outs of your project. To explain how this approval workflow operates, we’ve put together a flow chart that shows you who’s making decisions and what this means for your proposal.

You can view this flowchart by clicking here.

Exciting News! Gateway Phase 2 Coming Soon

We have some exciting news to share.

The team have been busy developing the next phase of Gateway Haplo and can now reveal this will soon be live.  Gateway Haplo Funding is our system for monitoring and reporting on the bidding activity throughout the University.

You’ll be happy to know that this next phase will deliver a number of improvements:-

  • Online Justification form – no more paper forms
  • Post Award section for recording project meetings, milestones and actions and storing those important documents
  • Improved reporting with a range of extra functions

As the system is updated and rolled out to all staff over the next couple of weeks, these changes will take shape. A set of guidelines, including handy tips, will also be available after our launch date.

Our official launch date is the 1st August and to help staff with these changes, a drop-in session will take place on Wednesday, 14th August from 10am-12pm in the Research and Enterprise Office, Ground Floor, Senate.

Unable to make the session? Drop the RIFS team an email and we can organise a 1:1 or group session.

We’re excited to announce our upcoming workshop programme for Spring/Summer 2019, we hope you’ll be able to join us!

To find out about the sessions, including a summary of each one and information on how you can book, download the brochure.

For the Getting the Most from GRANTfinder session, we’re welcoming an external speaker from the makers of GRANTfinder, Idox. In order to make sure that the session is viable, we’ll be taking a look at the number of attendees on Monday 13th and making a decision as to whether we’ll reschedule the event to a time when more people are available. If you’re interested in that session then please book ASAP and we’ll be in touch to confirm plans.

We’re launching something new!

Are you working with a small business or organisation on an idea that could use a financial boost?

If so, you are invited to apply for a Business Innovation Grant from our new competitive fund.

University-led projects can apply for up to £5,000 to be spent on staff time, materials and other project expenses, with the ultimate aim of furthering collaboration and progressing promising ideas. £5,000 equates to approximately 8-14 days of staff time (depending on your seniority) and could offer you the ring-fenced time you need to make real progress.

Suggestions for activity include:

  • Developing a proof of concept
  • Completing initial research that will inform how the concept will develop
  • Market research
  • Progressing a concept so you’re ready to apply for larger funding, such as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership
  • Solidifying a working relationship so that it leads to further consultancy, research or student placements
  • Supporting REF and research outcomes – could this project lead to a new research output or provide evidence for an ongoing impact case study?

Successful projects will need to have their funding spent by the 31st July. This is an internal competitive application process and all applications will be scored against a clear matrix.  You can download the application form here.

The application deadline for Business Innovation Grants is Tuesday 14th May.

For any questions about the Business Innovation Grants, please email Research and Innovation Funding Support.

In addition to the above, we are excited to announce a Strategic BIG Ideas Fund, with larger grants available to projects that involve wider strategic collaborations with multiple links across the business environment to widen our engagement as a University across Northamptonshire.  Applications to this fund are limited and if you are interested then please contact Charlotte Patrick for an initial discussion.

RIFS training and development sessions – opinions needed!

You may have heard of, or even attended one of our development workshops. We are already planning to repeat previous events that have had good feedback but we’re aware that this isn’t comprehensive. We’d like to use your input to update our offerings, including creating new sessions. We’d also like to hear from individuals and small groups who have more specific development needs as we’d be more than happy to tailor a session to you.
