Funder on-line application systems

An increasing number of funders now require researchers to submit applications using their online submission system when applying for grants. To use these systems, researchers need to register directly through the funder’s submission system to create an account.

This process can be time consuming and we advise you start this process early on in the proposal development stage.

Please note you must complete the internal approval process on Pure Award Management (PAM), even if you are applying using the funder’s online submission system. Some funders use a two-step submission process where your application will be routed to the Research and Innovation Funding Support office for authorisation and submission to the funder. The team cannot submit the application until approval has been granted on PAM.

Let us know in advance when you are planning to submit, especially if it is close to the deadline. This will allow us to make sure that someone is in the office and able to handle your application quickly.

Research Councils

UKRI have been working on improving how you apply for funding with the delivery of a new Funding Service digital platform with the aim to gradually phase out the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system over the next 12 months. The new service is part of the Simpler and Better Funding Programme which aims to make the process of applying for funding to delivering your project more streamlined and supportive. Learn more about the new service and how it benefits researchers and innovators applying for Research Council funding here

Funding calls are currently being trailed on the new service with more in the pipeline to be released over the next few months. To ensure you are applying on the correct portal, look under the “How to apply” section of the call.  Je-S accounts will not be migrated to the new service and you will be required to set up a new account on the new portal. To create an account, follow these Guidelines

Joint Electronic Submission System(Je-S) is the online submission portal for the Research Councils (AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC and STFC as well as the Technology Strategy Board (TSB).

Investigators must have a full Je-S account in order to be named as a Principle Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-I) on an application. For help to navigate the system, refer to the Je-S handbook.

Royal Society and the British Academy

Flexi-Grant (Royal Society) and Flexi-Grant (British Academy) enables investigators to apply for grants from these funders.

National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)

Applications are submitted either through the NIHR Management Information System (MIS) or the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility Research Management System, depending on the funding programme.
