Do you know our Waterside campus is “smart”? Over the past few years, our AI team and the University IT team have worked on some prototypes to see how we can use networking data and AI to improve campus services. In a nutshell, we take a snapshot of the location of all mobile devices on campus every minute and use a range of machine learning tools to process the anonymised data. This allows us to develop service improvement or security applications to detect anomalies (such as unauthorised access) or to make our operations more efficient (such as reducing energy consumption based on predicted usage).

Our research will appear in IEEE Network Magazine, a leading academic journal.

We already have several student dissertation projects that benefited from this smart campus project and I hope to see more students working on this topic!
