Storytelling with Media By Jessica, Elise, Rhea & Katie

Focus:
Exploring storytelling in the early years. The class will be told a story,  this will then be explored as a theme throughout the week . In this case the story will be ‘The Gruffalo’.

Suitable for:
Foundation Stage/KS1

What will you need for this activity?:
The app ‘Book Creator’ from App Store on an iPad.

What you would do:
The children would be asked to retell the story of the Gruffalo through the use of puppets and a backdrop. Discussion would be needed on how the characters within the story would feel and how to portray there voices. E.g the Gruffalo when angry would he have a deep voice or a quiet voice? The children will then capture the retelling of the story through the app ‘Book Creator’ on the iPad. The app will allow the children to set up the scene and take a picture, they can then add their voice to explain what is happening in the scene. For differentiation, more able children could add simple sentences through text.

Learning Benefits:
This activity will encourage children to describe the story setting, main events and the principle characters. It will enable children to be aware of how stories structure. This is furthered by enabling more meaning to the story.

Taking it further:
The story can also be told by the children actually acting out the story themselves through role play. This will help the children to understand the role and feelings of each character within the book further.

(Below is our example of the eBook, however it would not upload into the blog so I have print screened the book and used a presentation tool to present this).
