Whilst on my placement the school used the programme ‘scratch’ to ensure they reach the primary requirements. For planning and lesson objectives the school follows ‘IREO – the Irish engineering research software’ lesson plans. These are really useful ‘click here’ to download. The series of plans develop children’s knowledge and ability to apply key skills and practices to a variety of situations. Each lesson plan provides:
>Clear learning objectives with links to the new national curriculum
>An introductory activity with step by step instructions
>A variety of differentiated challenges for the children to explore
>A note section for class teacher to make any additional plans, differentiations, success criteria etc.
>Teacher tips
>Extra Curricular links and ideas.
I really think the lesson plans are a great idea, we discussed the fact that training had been provided with regards to the new curriculum but teachers still felt apprehensive about leading the session with all the new programmes and technology. By providing staff with clear plans, which ensured all statutory requirements are met and vocabulary introduced at the appropriate rate. It allows the teacher to become familiar with the programme and its features, developing their confidence whilst still ensuring children are receiving high level computing lessons.
The link takes you to the page and the first two lesson plans are completely free to download!
