Idea for Programming/Algorithms Lesson
Focus:
Algorithms for Key Stage 1
Suitable For:
Aimed at upper Key Stage 1 as the learning objectives link to the requirements for Key Stage 1 Computing in the national curriculum
What you need:
A set of Beebots, preferably one per pair
Learning Objectives:
To understand how to programme a beebot to travel in a certain direction
To identify what good instructions contain (for example an imperative verb)
Main Activity summary:
To use Beebots, like in the photo below, to practice programming skills by programming them to travel around objects.
Unplugged idea (starter activity):
Children to work in pairs with one children instructing and one child walking around a chair. The child who is instructing must be clear and tell the other child exactly which direction to face and how to walk.
Plugged idea (main activity):
To program the beebot to travel around a whole chair in one program.
Plenary:
Teacher chooses three different pairs to explain to the class what they did to make their beebot travel around the chair.
Extension Activity:
To program the beebot to travel out of the classroom door (out of sight) and back again in one program.
