Buildings and Architecture in KS1.

Focus:

For children to discuss and explore how using different materials can effect the strength, stiffness and stability of a building.

National Curriculum: “build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable.” (DfES, 2013)

Suitable:

KS1 and early KS2.

What you need:

A computer, linked to the story, and perhaps some materials available for children to experiment with after they have discussed the story and created their own hypothesis.

Learning benefits:

Using a story will engage children, and prompt discussion about different materials.

Could be used at either the beginning of a topic, to find out what they already know, or at the end of a lesson or unit to assess what they have learnt.

Links to both literacy and computing.
