DAY 1 reflections from BELGIUM
The first day of or project we started with explaining to the students what DLAB stands for and what it contains. We did this on the basis of a PowerPoint, this way it was clear for the students.
In our PowerPoint we explained the gravity of the “trash” situation. We showed the students some pictures of what “trash” means in our world, we told them facts and let them think about what they could do to improve the environment. The students had some pretty good ideas and were enthusiastic about the topic.
The checklist of that day 1
- Visit museum/exhibition of Cindy Wright
- Walk around Bruges and collect trash along the way
- Create a story around one “trash’ item you’ve collected that day.
To get inspiration for our trash building, we visited the exhibition of Cindy Wright. She is a Belgian artist who is very concerned about the environment and sustainability. For her paintings, she collects objects with which she makes a creation. She photographs this creation, after which the photos are greatly enlarged. In this way, she can paint in great detail, which makes her works seem true to life. During a walk in the woods, she collected various materials, such as moss, leaves and wood. Unfortunately, she also found plastic caps from drinks bottles and other waste, as you can see in one of her paintings.
We found it a very interesting exhibition. Her work really came through. It was even almost shocking. You can see in her work that she truly empathises with nature, and that is of course wonderful.
- After this visit the pupils walked through the center of Bruges to gather trash. Out of that trash they will make a piece of art on day two.
- At the end of this day the pupils chose one piece of trash and wrote a story about it. The story has a message for the reader. Want to read the stories? Follow the link!
