1. Guidance on avoiding the misclassification of waste
The Waste Industry Group has published an “easy to use” guide on common misconceptions in waste classification and how to avoid them. The group said “Misclassification of Waste- and how to avoid it” is aimed at waste producers, carriers, brokers, consultants and managers.
According to the group, the guide lists the most common mistakes in waste classification, explains why they are wrong, and sets out what to do about it. Categories include waste acceptance criteria (WAC), list of waste/EWC codes, and hazard property codes, as well as waste types such as metals, hydrocarbons, and inert wastes.

2. Trio win funding for mattress recycling trials
Three organisations have won funding bids to develop sustainable solutions for the textile content of used mattresses, as part of an ongoing competition run by Rhondda Cynon Taf council in South Wales.
The three successful bidders are: the University of South Wales; environmental consultancy, Commons Vision; and the Furniture Recycling Group/Resource Futures. Each bidder has been awarded funding to undertake feasibility work and to produce detailed bids for a pilot-scale operation.

3. Painless flu jab
A ‘painless’ sticking plaster flu jab that delivers vaccine into the skin has passed important safety tests in the first trial in people. The patch has a hundred tiny hair-like micro-needles on its adhesive side that penetrate the skin’s surface. It is simple enough for people to stick on themselves.

4. The Group’s 2017 conference
The Group’s 2017 conference will be held on Thursday October 5, at the Northampton Town’s football ground in Sixfields, Northampton. The event will focus on the sustainable management of food waste from the healthcare and hospitality sectors. It will feature speakers from WRAP, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, the Co-op, Northamptonshire Waste Partnership and Severn Trent Water.
There will be opportunities to explore funding and business support opportunities.
