December projects, information and ideas

While many schools have December packed with Christmas activities and events, you may well be looking for alternative ideas that can complement the seasonal festivities and help you when considering ‘standard 8’ factors with some pupils.

A good starting point is the Project Britain website which presents a range of information; the linked page relates to folk lore and customs which not only include those associated with Christmas but much more.

For example, December 28th is regarded as the unluckiest day of the year or  in ancient Roman times, 17th December was the beginning of the festival of Saturnalia, in honour of the god of agriculture. There is some interesting information about the winter solstice as well as other links.

Other sites you would find suitable is Teacher Planet and the TES site where therwintere is a wealth of links to resources.

Have fun planning your winter themes!
