The Department for Education has released Key stage 1 data on the phonics screening check and end of key stage 1 teacher assessments in reading, writing and mathematics.
The report shows that 81% of pupils met the expected standa
rd of phonic decoding at the end of year 1, an increase of 23 percentage points since the introduction of the assessment in 2012 while the percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard by the end of year 2 has risen to 91%. This shows a steady increase from the 85% of pupils achieving the standard since its introduction in 2013.
However, the more challenging curriculum against whch pupils were assessed this year means that figures for 2016 in Key stage 1 assessments are not regarded as comparable to 
those from earlier years. It is interesting to note that despite the improved scores in phonic decoding the percentage of pupils reaching the expected level in reading and writing has decreased by approximately 8 percentage points in each subject.
Much greater analysis of the data can be found within the document which may assist schools in comparing their data to national statistics in areas such as gender, school type, diversity and SEN.
