Teaching assistants improve results – results of 2 studies

News reports in several media streams are reporting on the published results of 2 focused studies funded by The Education Endowment Foundation where TAs have been trained to provide focused intervention programmes.

One of these was the Nuffield Early Language Intervention project with children in nursery and reception classes while the other, REACH,  aimed at helping struggling readers in years seven and eight through reading aloud and awareness word sound structures.

While offering reassuring acknowledgement of the beneficial role TAs play in supporting pupils through intervention strategies, one must be cautious when attributing this to the specific intervention programmes, but to the benefit of sustained targeted support for pupils identified as achieving below age expectation.
