We spoke to new UON Bears team captain Taylor Randall, ahead of the start of the 23/24 BUCS season.
How are you feeling in the build up to the season?
“The build up is good, we got a huge influx of freshers turn up to training, it’s good to see.
There is so much competition for positions this year that it’s pushing everyone to their absolute best, it’s exciting.”
Last year ended with a lot of good times, success in Varsity and Cross Codes, how are you carrying that into this year, is the confidence high?
“Of course we’re carrying it over, we now crave that winning feeling, it brings such a positive atmosphere to training.
“There’s a different buzz in the air this year we know what we’re capable of and we won’t settle for anything less than promotion.”
You’re captain now, a role with a lot of responsibility. How are you finding it? Are you relishing the opportunity?
“I was worried and nervous at first, but the team is full of leaders and positive role models.
“We all rely on each other, play for each other not just one person.
“The bears I have wrapped around me make the role of captain exciting.”
New year, new players.. have the first years impressed you in pre season so far? is there improvement around the team?
“It’s always hard with uni teams, you can’t recruit, we lose a lot of players every year. But the freshers we gained this year have had an immediate impact and you’ll definitely see them in the starting lineup come Wednesday.”
Any teams you’re excited to face this year?
“Bring on cross codes.”
