Smart Adaptive Materials & Structures Research Group

Smart materials and structures are not materials and structures in the usual sense. They are products of human ingenuity which enable us to design our own units, and thereby create materials with unprecedented effective properties. These unusual material and structures properties are normally derived from their specific geometry as well as their material composition where they show a unique mechanical property based on their structure. An ongoing challenge for recent engineering is to create these smart and adaptive structures with an unconventional response, programmed by a suitable geometrical or topological design. The fabrication and testing of rationally designed products challenge is just developing.

SAMS (Smart Adaptive Materials & Structures) Research Group was set up by researchers in Materials science and Engineering, to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers across UK with similar interest in this field, to facilitate an effective use of existing human/equipment resources, and provide a forum for integrated planning of research, sharing of facilities and joint any research and student supervision. The research group aims at future development and covering a wide range in:

  • Design
  • Simulation and Modelling
  • Applications
  • Manufacturing

The group will provide a platform for collaboration between universities as well as industrial projects and partnership who are interested in this field.
