Tensions increase as the University of Northampton Sports Dome remains closed.

The sports dome at the University of Northampton continues to stay shut after several weeks, leaving campus sports teams in two minds.

The roof of the sports dome has begun to leak leaving a severe health and safety issue leaving all teams with nowhere to play.

Fred from VP Futsal, who regularly trains at the sports dome, has said the massive impact on the team’s performance so far this season.

“We have been given no alternative, no apology and no timescale on the return, we have been allowed to book alternative facilities but not been given assistance to do so and the response from the university has been poor.

“As our session in the sports dome was our coached session, we are now left with no coaching for upcoming games and hence are far less prepared than we would be otherwise.”

In response to Fred, Chris Rockall, who is the Catering and Commercial Manager at UON, provided an update on the repair work.

“Due to the nature of the building it needs a specialist company to come in and repair the roof, we have acted as fast as we possibly can.

“We fully understand the disruption this has caused to the students who use the space as part of their courses and student sports teams.”

Work has now started on the roof repair, but Chris has stated more issues have come into place.

“I am pleased to say that the work is underway, it is being repaired but more issues have come to light, they will now all be repaired, and the dome will be up and running.”

Chris also replied to Fred’s comments on the poor communication with the Futsal team.

“With regards to Fred’s comments, we have liaised with the SU (Students Union) and the sports team there as we don’t have details on all the teams that use the dome.

“The SU were in agreement on the decision, I know they have worked hard to find alternative spaces for teams to train.”
