Session 9: Directed tasks

Hello everyone

Well done for getting the hang of the beginning computing tools so quickly!

Your directed tasks for this week are to do some peer assessment of your blogfolios, to research maths and data handling resources (Group C) and to create a computing resource (Groups A, B, D and E).

1. Peer assessment of blogfolios

Your blogs are all coming along really well and we want to make sure all you achieve the best you can. We think it is timely to take an honest look at your work so far with a critical friend and see whether you are on track to meet the marking criteria.  At the end of the PGCE Booklet you’ll find a marking grid and some guidance. Go through this carefully together and highlight where you think you are right now. You might find it useful to use this Blog checklist. Take time to comment on each others’ blogs.

It would be good to record this process by writing a short blogpost about opportunities for peer assessment within ICT, and say how it worked for you. Think about the advantages of children being able to share their work and receive comments and feedback from others. There are some examples in this video of Buckingham Primary School pupils preparing video projects for their school BAFTAs ceremony and sharing their work in progress.

You’ll find more blogging ‘how tos’ and screencasts on the Resources page of HelenonICT. If you need more guidance on any aspect of blogging (or anything else) do feel free to send me an email: (helen.caldwell@northampton.ac.uk).

2. Creating a computing resource

We would like you to develop a computing resource using software you have explored in the sessions, such as 2DIY or Scratch (Group C have already done this). You should include a curriculum plan and reflect on the range of outcomes and progression of skills.

Examples:

  • Plan a project for older pupils to design games for younger pupils.
  • Plan a resource to fit in a Code Club-style sequence of lessons.
  • Create an example game and suggest how you could achieve this in the classroom.
  • Create a curriculum themed resource with suggestions for challenge extensions.
  • Plan a computing day for a year group.

Find out more about Code Clubs by listening to this interview with Sheralee Clarke from Bushfield school in Milton Keynes:

3. Maths and data handling

If you have already completed the computing resource and blogged about it (Group C), please could you move on to thinking about data handling, modelling and simulation. One of our group suggested that you would find it useful right now to gather together ways of using the interactive whiteboard effectively in maths ready for your placements. You could begin by exploring relevant resources from these Pinterest collections: Infographics and Data and Supporting Maths. Think about:

  • how the IWB can be used effectively to provide visual reinforcement for  maths concepts.
  • methods for collecting and interrogating data and how findings can be represented through infographics, graphs and charts.
  • the use of modelling and simulations for making sense of complex situations and exploring concepts that are difficult to test.
  • how we can use models and simulations to investigate a variety of real and imaginary situations, enter choices and explore the effects on outcomes.

Please come to the next session with one resource or website to share with the group.

All our very best wishes for successful and enjoyable placements. 🙂
