E-Safety

This is something that needs to be addressed with children to ensure that they stay safe online.

There are a number of websites and groups set up to try and tackle this.

An example of this is childnet who offer support and resources for teachers to use with their pupils.

It is vital to brief pupils about the dangers of meeting people online and how to protect themselves. As well as this it is also important to talk to them about suitable ways in which to use the internet and to treat people online in an appropriate way. This includes not cyber bullying.

Schools often have posters displayed around the school to remind pupils of the correct way to use the internet. An example of this can be seen below.

Due to the fact that social media and technology is being used by an increasingly younger age it is becoming more important to inform pupils about what is out there on the web.

Session 6!

In this session we looked at three types of technology that can be used in the classroom. We were then given the chance to split up into small groups and try out the three different things and come up with ideas for how they could be used in the class.

This is a picture of the first piece of technology we were introduced to, it is called Raspberry Pi. It is a small device that acts as a computer. It has two usb ports for connecting a mouse and keyboard, a HDMI cable to connect to a display monitor, an ethernet port for the internet and various other connection points to add extras to your experience of Raspberry Pi. The extras that can be added include things such as cameras and LED display boards, they can be purchased online. The system runs on Linux and the cost for a raspberry pi ranges from around £25-£30. They are small devices that can easily be moved around and set up in different places and also give pupils the opportunity to see the inside of a computer and the different physical components.

The second piece of technology was Lego WeDo. This is made up of a computer programme and physical lego pieces. There will be a story and tutorial on the computer and the pupils must then construct the model required. This connects to the computer and by creating a sequence of actions on the computer the model will move and make sounds. This is a fun way for pupils to learn about coding and gives them the opportunity to follow instructions and physically create something.

The last thing we looked at was MaKey Makey. this is something that can fascinate pupils and be used in various different ways. It is a small piece that is made up of cables and a control board. 

If you watch the video above it shows how this piece can be used to create a piano using fruit! PEople have caught onto this idea and used Scratch to create many different games and activities that can be used alongside MaKey MaKey. This could be used in music lessons as well as ICT and is bound to grab the attention of every member of the class.

RE session 6.

Assessments in RE should be done through Formative assessments. This means assessing during lessons. this can be done through ways such as written work, drama, class discussions and questioning.

To ensure that assessment opportunities take place they need to be planned in in advance. And to plan effectively you must make good assessments in previous lessons.Both these aspects work together in harmony and both should be used to their full potential.

 

RE session 5.

This session was about looking at educational visits and how they can benefit learning in RE. We also looked at the pros and cons of having visitors in the classroom.

Bringing someone into the classroom can give information that comes directly from a primary source and can engage children more. It can excite them and up their interest levels. It will also allow children to ask questions but it is vital that these are thought up before the visitor comes in so that the teacher can ensure they are suitable. It is also important that the teacher checks what the visitor is going to talk about and they also need to make sure that the visitor talks about appropriate material.

Before moving onto talking about educational visits we were asked to talk about visits that we had been on as pupils. This helped to think about what makes a trip good or bad and why they are beneficial.

We then split into groups and planned a visit to a specific location. We chose Exeter Cathedral. We came up with different ideas about what pupils could do their on the day, this included ideas such as drawing windows or creating a piece of creative writing. There is also a virtual tour on the website. this could be visited before using ipads or the smartboard for the pupils to plan their visit.

Scratch! Session 5

This lesson we have been learning about coding. Pupils can easily use this programme and create their own. When you use this online there is a step by step guide to help you.

We also discussed as a class about how the curriculum has changed to include this new subject, Computing. We looked at how a number of different sites can be used in the classroom such as Pinterest and Scratch. Pinterest is useful for teachers to share resources and ideas between each other in a simple yet clever manner.

We were then encouraged to try Scratch for ourselves. By teaching ourselves how to use this software it enables us to help pupils to use it and get the most out of it. My Scratch can be found above.

 

This session I have also added an RSS feed to my blog for the BBC Education website.

Session 4! Bee Bots.

In this session we experimented with different activities to do with coding.

We chose to settle with Bee Bots. These are electronic devices that can be easily programmed by pupils to move in certain directions. These can then be used to do a range of activities. We came up with the idea of getting the pupils to make their bee bots move in directions that would take them from their current location to the school hall.

They could create maps on A1 pieces of paper and make their bee bots travel along it. This then links into geography (map work) and maths (co-ordinates).

There is also a Bee Bot app for ipads which allows the children to do certain tasks and travel their way through mazes and obstacles interactively.

During this session I also created a Tag Cloud using the Widgets option.

The Hour of Code!

In the previous session we were told about The Hour of Code scheme that is being rolled out across America. I decided to give this a go and came up with this.

In the future it is predicted that coding will be a considered to be a basic thing that pupils will need to know. This means that us as teachers need to familiarise ourselves with it so we can be comfortable in teaching it.

Padlet! Session 3

This session we used a website called padlet.

The idea of this was to use technology across a range of schools. Our idea was to have a variety of schools across the country all singing a christmas song. They would then put all of these clips together to make a community themed song.

Skype could be used to talk to other schools and sing to each other.

We used padlet to add our ideas to a class wall so that everyone could see it. In small groups we all posted our ideas to the wall.

QR codes were introduced to use and explained how they can be used in the classroom. These are barcodes that when scanned can open up a web link or a piece of information. A way in which these could be used is to make a treasure trail around the school environment where the pupils have to scan the codes to find the clue about where to go next.

Haiku Deck

We created this using Haikudeck which a an app on the ipad. We got our inspiration from scanning a QR code and getting the title The language of art and design. 

This app is simple and can be used with pupils. The photos are already stored on the app and can easily be chosen by the pupils. This was designed for use in a languages week whereby the school is learning about different cultures and countries from around the world.

Session One.

In todays session we were manipulating media to use in the classroom. We decided to create a video of Is this the way to amarillo? This is because children in need is on friday and so this this activity could be done by the children.

We originally planned on using a green screen to change the background of where we were but the app for this would not work due to the ipad being updated to ios7 and the app itself not being changed. Because of this we decided to film it in different parts of the campus and then put the various clips together using Windows Movie Maker before later uploading to youtube.

This activity can be easily replicated by children but it shows the issue with technology. When planning to do this in the class the ipads would all need to be checked beforehand to ensure all are working.
