Elizabeth (Tomos) Palmer

Learning Designer

2016 conference: What are the factors that encourage and inhibit student engagement in online activities, such as e-tivities? An URB@N project

Elizabeth PalmerI began teaching in the Critical and Contextual Studies department of West Wales School of the Arts (Trinity St. David/ Coleg Sir Gar) in 2010. During the course of my four year tenure there; I developed and delivered the theoretical programmes for the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design and BTEC Diplomas in Fashion and Clothing, taught into the Undergraduate programmes at L4-6 and became course leader for both the BA (Hons) Fine Art Contemporary Practice and Multidisciplinary programmes. In January 2014 I took up post at the University of Northampton teaching academic and cognitive skills, writing and research methodologies across a range of programmes L4-L8 for CfAP (Centre for Achievement and Performance). In October 2015 I became a Learning Designer, involved in the implementation of the University’s Learning and Teaching Plan, particularly in the run up to our new Waterside campus in 2018. It goes without saying, an interest in efficient and effective learning strategies has been at the root of most of the research projects I have undertaken. In 2014 I co-authored a paper outlining ‘Thin’ pedagogy, an approach to 21st century teaching that draws on the liminal, the archaic and the mystical. More recently I have focused on the nature, purpose and role of transferable skills, arguably a core liminal threshold learning experience in the HE environment and one that by its nature is difficult to address directly but is vital to students for all manner of reasons. Throughout my teaching career I have continued to operate as a professional artist and arts researcher, most recently exhibiting in the National Original Print Exhibition, Bankside London (2015) and speaking at the Redefining Print Symposium in Double Elephant Workshop, Exeter.
