Going beyond the Library

You have an opportunity to research your topic in resources above and beyond our University Library. There are a number of other services and resources you may find useful. Below are resources organised according to how you might use them: visiting other libraries, accessing resources outside of the University of Northampton and managing your references.

Visiting other Libraries:

SCONUL Access:
SCONUL Access is a cooperative scheme amongst a large number of academic libraries in the UK. This allows you to visit other University libraries to access their print resources as a reference user. Please see the SCONUL website for further information and how to join the scheme. Remember, you can see what other University libraries hold by searching the catalogues on their website or using COPAC.

COPAC:
Copac is a freely available library catalogue, giving access to the merged online catalogues of many major UK and Irish academic and National libraries, as well as increasing numbers of specialist libraries.

Visiting the British Library: You may like to visit the British Library – which is a legal deposit library and holds all the books published within the UK. You can visit it for free and explore the exhibitions. Information about visiting is available on their website.

Accessing resources not held at the University:

  • Interlibrary Loans: If you would like to access a book or journal article we do not have in the Library you can access it through interlibrary loan. We can order books from the British Library or Nursing Union List of Journals (NULJ) which you can then collect from the University Library. If it is a journal article you want, we can send you a copy. The online request form is available on the Library homepage.

Managing your references:

  • Refworks: Refworks is a useful piece of software to organise and collect your references.  You can export your references from the database into Refworks and then use Refworks as a basis for your reference list. There are guides and tutorials available on Refworks, under the Help tab. Refworks is on the A-Z list of databases.
  • Zetoc Alerts: A Zetoc Alert automatically sends you emails listing the table of contents from particular journals and articles that match searches you have created. Available on the A-Z list of databases.
