2. Consultation on the proposed Control of Mercury (Enforcement) Regulations 2017

This consultation seeks views on the government’s proposed approach to implementing the requirements of EU Regulation 2017/852 on Mercury, which will be contained within the Control of Mercury (Enforcement) Regulations 2017.  The consultation will be of particular interest to those involved in the export of waste mercury; hospitals and dental practitioners; operators providing temporary or permanent storage of waste mercury; operators interested in mercury waste management, specifically in the conversion and solidification of waste mercury; and other areas.

If you wish to respond please reply to either Kim Mynard (kim.mynard@ciwm.co.uk) or Tina Benfield (tina.benfield@ciwm.co.uk), by 16 November at the very latest to enable all comments to be collated and submitted to Defra before the deadline.

3. Organisations required for the Group’s student experience programme

The Group is looking for organisations that would be willing to support a student for its ‘2-day work experience’ programme. The programme is now in its third year, and previously has been undertaken with various organisations including SRCL, Bywaters and Grundon, with positive feedback both from the students and the organisations. It offers the opportunity to facilitate the entry of students/future employees into the sector. The expenses for the students’ travel, accommodation and subsistence will be paid by the Group, using monies generated from its seminars. 4. NHS Sustainability Roadshow: Cardiff – November 30

The Roadshow will provide hands on skills, guidance and support to drive forward improvements to sustainable development within Estates and wider healthcare fields.

Speakers include:

5. Free workshops to help staff save money and be greener

Energy Saving Trust and Home Energy Scotland – in partnership with Zero Waste Scotland – are delivering workplace-based workshops to help employees understand how best to
reduce food waste at work as they become more attuned to sustainable behaviour.  The Scottish Government-funded courses are free, and tailored to fit in with your organisation’s needs; they’re run at a venue, time and length that suit you and your staff.

1. The Group’s 2017 sustainable food waste management conference

The Group’s 2017 conference which is sponsored by  Sharpsmart and Olleco, will be held on Thursday October 5, at the Northampton Town’s football ground in Sixfields, Northampton.

Speakers will include:

Celia Jackson from Severn Trent Waster. Celia has worked in Engineering Operations for over 30 years, moved to Severn Trent Water in 2011 taking on the role of Network Manager looking after the sewers in Birmingham and Wolverhampton areas. This built a real interest in sewer misuse and protecting our customers from blockages and flooding. Following this worked as Commercial Waste Manager controlling the discharges of waste into our sewer network with Commercial bodies. Now Project Delivery Lead in Innovation team managing projects to tackle Sewer misuse

Kevan Wallace who is the Assistant Hotel Services Manager – Catering at Frimley Park Hospital and Heatherwood Hospital Ascot part of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust in Surrey and former National Chairman of The Hospital Caterers Association. Kevan has worked in the hospitality sector for over 45 years, starting out in hotel management. He then transferred to working in contract catering, working at a wide range of organisations. For the past 26 years, he has worked in the NHS, initial at Guys Hospital and in August 1996 joined Frimley Park Hospital. A great believer in the best possible food for patients as part of their care programme, with various Government initiatives has raised the public’s awareness of the importance of hospital meals and its contribution to patient recovery and well-being.

2. Plans for 2018

In 2018, the Group will be hosting two training workshops, and will also again be running its student experience programme. More details to follow….

3. Local Partnerships

Local Partnerships, which is a joint venture between  HM Treasury and the Local Government Association (LGA), delivers specialist support for a wide range of infrastructure programmes including delivering efficiencies in waste services for the north west, north east, Yorkshire and the Humber, west midlands and the east of England.

4. Introductory Guide to new Medical Device Regulations launched

The interactive guide will help new and experienced manufacturers navigate their obligations under new EU regulations on medical devices. It provides information on the new EU Regulations for Medical devices (MDR) and in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDR) including producing significantly more performance evidence, which will need to be updated throughout the life cycle of the device.

5. NHS Sustainability Roadshow- London

Join us for FREE at the first NHS Sustainability Roadshow of the 2018 Campaign. The conference will address how the NHS can take advantage of sustainable development. This includes presentations on:

  • Funding energy efficiency
  • Creating a reuse system in your estate and reducing waste
  • Utilising leadership 
  • Estate rationalisation
