1. Furniture Re-use Network: buy nothing new day – 24 November, 2017
The Furniture Re-use Network is launching a new campaign, Buy Nothing New Day to dispel the myth that second-hand means second-best and encourage people to go to their local charity shop on Friday 24 November. Instead of Black Friday, choose Nothing New Day.

2. Call for publications from academic and non-academics
The journal, Environments is currently running a Special Issue entitled “Innovative Processes and Technologies for the Management of Hazardous Waste”. Prof. Mentore Vaccari (University of Brescia, Italy) and Dr Terry Tudor (University of Northampton, UK) are serving as Guest Editors for this issue.

3. Half day workshop on remanufacturing/repair/reuse and single use in the healthcare sector (2 May, 2018)
This half-day workshop will focus on the remanufacturing/repair/reuse of bulky items, as well as the effective management of single use items in healthcare facilities. There will be short presentations from Alan Armstrong from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, and Karl Sheehan from Sharpsmart. Following the presentations, there will be the opportunity for discussion and the sharing of information. These discussions will be facilitated by Anne Woolridge and Maria Mahon. A light lunch will be served at the end.

4. Waste prevention implementation fund
Up to £100,000 grants available for the implementation of waste prevention measures. The fund has been designed to help organisations overcome financial barriers to undertake a particular project with a focus on raw materials savings, carbon savings and the movement of waste material up the hierarchy.

5. CIWM East Anglian Centre – Sainsbury’s Discovery Communities in the Region – Food Waste Prevention (30 November 2017)
Sainsbury’s plc launched its ‘Waste less, Save more’ programme in 2015 to help combat the growing issue of food waste. Following an innovative 12-month trial in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, the retailer has unveiled a pioneering 10-point plan, which included a further £1 million investment to support 29 UK-wide Discovery Communities.
