2. Healthcare commitment to tackle climate change launched at Clinton Global Initiative

Health Care Without Harm, sponsored by the Skoll Foundation, unveiled a commitment at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to reduce health care’s carbon footprint in order to protect public health from climate change.

Health care currently represents 8% of U.S. and 5% of European greenhouse gas emissions. The CGI commitment sets an ambitious target to mobilize 10,000 hospitals and health centers on every continent in a collective effort to reduce the health sector’s greenhouse gas emissions by 26 million metric tons annually by 2020.

3. Joint Healthcare Waste and Resources Research Group and ISWA International conference (sponsored by Grundon Waste Management)

In conjunction with the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), the Group will be hosting an international conference on April 14 and 15, 2016. It will be held at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Topics to be covered will include current and emerging technologies, sustainability and preparing for emergencies.

4. EU circular economy package launched

On Dec 2, the European Commission adopted a new Circular Economy Package that will mean member states will have to recycle 65% of its municipal waste by 2030. 

The aim of the Package is to stimulate Europe’s transition towards a circular economy, which has the potential to boost global competitiveness, foster sustainable economic growth and generate new jobs

4. NI proposes independent Environmental Protection Agency

The Environment Minister of Northern Ireland, Mark H Durkan, has called for views on potential options for an independent environmental protection agency.

The Minister has circulated a new discussion document, “Environmental Governance in Northern Ireland” to key stakeholders from business and industry, agriculture, local government and non-governmental organisations.

1. Managing Risks in the Secondary Materials Market
5th November | 10.00am – 12.00pm | Committee Room 10, Palace of Westminster

This parliamentary seminar will examine the volatility and risks that secondary material markets are exposed to, discussing how these can be managed and whether there is a need for Governments to provide further support to the industry both at a UK and European level. The event will aim to look at a number of different secondary materials, including plastics, paper, aluminium and glass.

2.SDU report on healthcare system adaptation

The report on how the health and care system is adapting to climate change was requested by government under the Adaptation Reporting Power (ARP) component of the Climate Change Act (2008) and was produced by a cross system working group (DH, NHS England and Public Health England). The group was formed to assess how climate change risks are assessed, whether adaptation plans are in place and how the impacts of adaptation plans are evaluated in key parts of the system, including: Overarching system level; National Bodies; Providers (NHS); Ambulance Trusts; Clinical Commissioning Groups; and Community/The Public’s Health (Health and Wellbeing Boards).

1. Addenbrooke’s Hospital is top for waste management

When it comes to waste management, Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) has come out top. The Carbon Trust awarded CUH a score of 89% for its waste management, higher than any other NHS Foundation Trust.

2. ISWA/Finnovaregio financing opportunities alert

The ISWA Financing Opportunities Alert is the result of a co-operation between ISWA and Finnovaregio.  The aim of this co-operation is to provide ISWA members with regular information on calls related to waste management projects.

4. Environmental Audit Committee scrutiny of sustainability in the NHS

In March, as part of its inquiry on sustainability in the NHS, the UK Government’s Environmental Audit Committee held a public evidence session to examine sustainable development governance and operations.  MPs questioned SDU’s Sonia Roschnik, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Gina Radford and John Holden, head of Policy Partnerships & Innovation at the Department of Health on the extent to which the NHS is set up to deliver on the Sustainable Development Strategy and progress so far.

5. EU circular economy consultation to be launched

Recently, Environment Commissioner, Karmenu Vella, confirmed in a speech at the European Business Summit that the European Commission is “…about to launch an online public consultation on the main options of the [Circular Economy Package] plan”, which he added would be “significantly ambitious”.
