1. Would you like to be part of the next carbon and natural resource footprinting for the NHS and health sector?

The SDU are looking to form a temporary carbon and natural resource footprinting working group. 

The group will feed into the development of the national Health and Social Care sector carbon and natural resource footprinting process. The 2018 footprint will underpin the work to develop the sector strategy  and plans for 2020-2025, ensuring that national footprint supports local action. This is a crucial change to engage at the earliest point in the development process.

2. Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP) Seeks Transformational Low-Carbon Projects

The Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP) offers a range of support mechanisms such as project development, expert advice and funding; supporting the development of substantive private, public and community low-carbon projects across Scotland. Furthermore, the LCITP aims to contribute towards the Scottish Government’s long-term target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2020. The LCITP will consider support for the following types of project activities:
  • Low carbon and/or renewable electricity and heat generation.
  • Local energy economies.
  • Heat recovery (eg district heating).
  • Energy storage and distributed energy systems.
  • Hydrogen.
  • Demand side management and active network management.
  • Innovative/ local finance solutions and investor readiness for low carbon projects.
  • Energy efficiency (eg non-domestic building retrofit)
  • Resource efficiency.
  • Materials recycling and re-use.

4. The Group’s 2017 conference

The Group’s 2017 conference will be held on Thursday October 5, at the Northampton Town’s football ground in Sixfields, Northampton. The event will focus on the sustainable management of food waste from the healthcare and hospitality sectors. It will feature speakers from WRAP, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, the Co-op, Northamptonshire Waste Partnership and Severn Trent Water. The event will be sponsored by  Sharpsmart and Olleco.

5. The ‘O’ word

The appropriate segregation and management of offensive waste remains one of the biggest waste management challenges for the healthcare sector. Views on how best to deal with this waste stream vary across the UK, not only amongst the healthcare community which produces the waste and the contractors who collect it, but between the regulators in each of the UK countries.
