4. SBRI funding competition: business productivity portal

Innovate UK is to invest up to £500,000 to develop solutions that provide businesses with access to information on improving productivity. These solutions will help businesses at all levels – leaders, management and employees – access new opportunities to improve productivity levels where they work.

The SDU’s Health Outcomes of Travel Tool (HOTT) helps NHS organisations measure the impact their travel and transport has in environmental, financial and health terms. An innovative tool it allows the quantification of impacts from different travel sources to allow the creation of a plan and targeted initiatives to reduce the NHS’s impact from travel and transport.

3. Your business is food – don’t throw it away

5. Government funding for electric vehicle-to-grid technologies

Up to £20 million is available from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy – working with the Office for Low Emission Vehicles and Innovate UK – to fund projects that investigate new business models, consumer awareness and technologies that support interaction between electric vehicles and the grid.

3. Newton Fund: global funding opportunities for UK companies

2. Should parents pay to bin used nappies?

Parents have raised a stink over “ridiculous” plans by some councils in England and Wales to charge them to take away nappies on top of their household waste.

3. Recomed wins at the National Recycling Awards

Recomed, a scheme to recover PVC medical devices, has jointly won the Waste Prevention category of the 2017 National Recycling Awards, for an approach to sustainable healthcare recycling.

The scheme, which runs across the UK, is run by project partners Axion Consulting, a resource recovery specialist, and the British Plastics Federation.

Since 2014 RecoMed has supplied recycling containers, communication materials and collections to participating hospitals.

1. Guidance on avoiding the misclassification of waste

The Waste Industry Group has published an “easy to use” guide on common misconceptions in waste classification and how to avoid them. The group said “Misclassification of Waste- and how to avoid it” is aimed at waste producers, carriers, brokers, consultants and managers.

According to the group, the guide lists the most common mistakes in waste classification, explains why they are wrong, and sets out what to do about it. Categories include waste acceptance criteria (WAC), list of waste/EWC codes, and hazard property codes, as well as waste types such as metals, hydrocarbons, and inert wastes.

2. Trio win funding for mattress recycling trials

Three organisations have won funding bids to develop sustainable solutions for the textile content of used mattresses, as part of an ongoing competition run by Rhondda Cynon Taf council in South Wales.

The three successful bidders are: the University of South Wales; environmental consultancy, Commons Vision; and the Furniture Recycling Group/Resource Futures.  Each bidder has been awarded funding to undertake feasibility work and to produce detailed bids for a pilot-scale operation.

3. Painless flu jab

A ‘painless’ sticking plaster flu jab that delivers vaccine into the skin has passed important safety tests in the first trial in people. The patch has a hundred tiny hair-like micro-needles on its adhesive side that penetrate the skin’s surface. It is simple enough for people to stick on themselves.

1.Consultation on new air quality plan

The government today published a draft plan to improve air quality by reducing nitrogen dioxide levels in the UK.

The options now open for consultation on reducing nitrogen dioxide in towns and cities are designed to reduce the impact of diesel vehicles, and accelerate the move to cleaner transport.

The Guardian Sustainable Business Awards recognise those businesses that are undertaking ‘innovation and impact’ in communicating sustainability and engaging with employees to make sustainability relevant for them and the wider society. 5. Need training to manage a waste site?

Operators are required to ensure they have appropriate technically competent managers on site in accordance with an ‘approved scheme’. The EPOC course will enable you to gain an Environmental Permitting Operators Certificate. This proves that you are technically competent and know how to comply with your waste facilities’ environmental permit and waste regulations.

1. Would you like to be part of the next carbon and natural resource footprinting for the NHS and health sector?

The SDU are looking to form a temporary carbon and natural resource footprinting working group. 

The group will feed into the development of the national Health and Social Care sector carbon and natural resource footprinting process. The 2018 footprint will underpin the work to develop the sector strategy  and plans for 2020-2025, ensuring that national footprint supports local action. This is a crucial change to engage at the earliest point in the development process.

2. Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP) Seeks Transformational Low-Carbon Projects

The Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme (LCITP) offers a range of support mechanisms such as project development, expert advice and funding; supporting the development of substantive private, public and community low-carbon projects across Scotland. Furthermore, the LCITP aims to contribute towards the Scottish Government’s long-term target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2020. The LCITP will consider support for the following types of project activities:
  • Low carbon and/or renewable electricity and heat generation.
  • Local energy economies.
  • Heat recovery (eg district heating).
  • Energy storage and distributed energy systems.
  • Hydrogen.
  • Demand side management and active network management.
  • Innovative/ local finance solutions and investor readiness for low carbon projects.
  • Energy efficiency (eg non-domestic building retrofit)
  • Resource efficiency.
  • Materials recycling and re-use.

EU decision-makers are currently updating the EU Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive, which protects workers exposed to carcinogenic and reprotoxic hazards during preparation and administration of cytotoxic drugs for cancer patients

5. Milton Keynes to host a ‘community fridge’

The Old Bath House Community Centre in Wolverton has successfully secured pilot funding for Milton Keynes’ first ever Community Fridge, which will be trialled with the support of environmental charity Hubbub UK in a growing effort to tackle food waste.

1. Manufacturing and Materials Innovation Competition Round Three Open

The aim of the Manufacturing and Materials Innovation Competition is to stimulate and widen innovation in UK manufacturing and materials. A range of projects that address technical or commercial challenges can be supported. These aim to increase business productivity, competitiveness and growth, particularly for SMEs. A project may focus on technical feasibility, industrial research or experimental development. The type of innovation project will depend on the nature of the challenge the applicant business is facing.

2. OECD vacancy – Water governance co-ordinator

The OECD is looking for an experienced programme co-ordinator to lead the activities of the OECD Water Governance Programme. S/he will be expected to carry out and supervise economic and policy analysis, to draft and ensure the quality control of the reports and policy briefs; to disseminate the work in relevant events and networks; to co-ordinate the biannual multi-stakeholder network and its working groups; and to fundraise actively to ensure the sustainability of the Programme.

The Co-op is aiming to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by replacing the usual polystyrene bases for its pizza packaging with recyclable cardboard.

5. Vacancy with CESVI for a waste management specialist in Tajikistan

The role will last for 5 months, starting in August 2017.
The Waste Management Specialist will be based in Ayni, with frequent travels to Dushanbe.
S/he reports to the Project Manager/Environment expert and responds to the Head of Mission and the Desk officer (HQ).

The main activities, s/he will be involved are:

• Mapping of the main centres of waste and production in the project target area
• Support, organization and technical backstopping for trainings and awareness seminars on sustainable management of waste (bringing innovations)
• Support and evaluation of the recycling system
• Support in training on compost techniques to rural settlements
• Study of the impact of the new collection system
