2. Organisations required for the Group’s student experience programme

The Group is looking for organisations that would be willing to support a student for its ‘2-day work experience’ programme. The programme is now in its third year, and previously has been undertaken with various organisations including SRCL, Bywaters and Grundon, with positive feedback both from the students and the organisations. It offers the opportunity to facilitate the entry of students/future employees into the sector. The expenses for the students’ travel, accommodation and subsistence will be paid by the Group, using monies generated from its seminars. If you are interested, please email terry.tudor@northampton.ac.uk.

3. Rushlight Awards

The Rushlight Awards are designed specifically to support and promote all the latest clean technologies, innovations and initiatives for businesses and other organisations throughout UK, Ireland and internationally.

There are separate categories for each of the renewable energies, clean fuels, transport, energy efficiency, power generation and storage, resource, water, sustainable manafacturing, clean environment and deployment initiatives.

4. Viridor works with the University of Sheffield on a robotics project

Robotics, cobotics and hive robots – all are innovative technology which, if correctly harnessed for the waste industry, could have a significant impact on plant safety and efficiency, according to recycling, resources and renewable energy company, Viridor.

Viridor has spent two years working with the University of Sheffield on projects which have very practical and specific applications.

The Healthcare Waste and Resources Research Group

1.£10m funding for innovative approaches to a low carbon built environment

Government has launched a grant scheme to invest up to £10 million to develop technologies that reduce the carbon emissions associated with providing heat and hot water to UK buildings. Innovative technologies, processes and tools are eligible for support and applicants may apply for a grant of £200,000 –  2 million.

Applications should be submitted by 2 January 2018.

3. Procter & Gamble launches plastic bottles made of PCR and ocean plastics

The Procter & Gamble (P&G) Company recently launched the Fairy Ocean Plastic bottle made completely from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and ocean plastic. The launch of the bottle aims to raise awareness of the issue of ocean plastic and what can be done to prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean.

4. Identification holes to help visually impaired to recycle

Different coloured wheelie bins for waste and recycling can work for most people, but they are not an effective aid for people with a visual impairment.

1. The 6th European Environmental Evaluators Network Forum: Evaluating Innovation in Environmental Protection and Sustainability

The 6th European Environmental Evaluators Network Forum in Edinburgh, Scotland, will bring together practitioners, academics, policy-makers and other users of environmental evaluation to share views, knowledge and experiences about the use, relevance and future priorities for climate and environment policy evaluation.

2. Workshops in 2018

In 2018, the Group will be hosting two half day training workshops:

Workshop one on May 2, at Frimley Park Hospital will focus on remanufacturing/repair/reuse of bulk items, and single use items.

Workshop two, which is scheduled for the autumn in Sheffield, will examine effective waste segregation and hazardous waste management.

4. HSE sets out priorities for the waste and recycling sector

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has published its priority areas for the waste and recycling sector in a major new publication. The publication outlines the focus of the HSE over the next 3-5 years over 19 industry sectors.

Alongside a continuing focus on industries that create “major hazards” and those subject to “statutory permissioning regimes”, the majority of HSE’s elective resources will be focused on agriculture, construction, logistics and transport, manufacturing, public services, and waste and recycling.

1. The Group’s 2017 sustainable food waste management conference

The Group’s 2017 conference which is sponsored by  Sharpsmart and Olleco, will be held on Thursday October 5, at the Northampton Town’s football ground in Sixfields, Northampton.

Speakers will include:

Alison Wilson is a General Manager working in the Estates and Facilities Division at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT) and has worked in the NHS for 12 years.  CHFT were one of three Trusts to work alongside the Soil Association focusing on Food for Life in a healthcare setting initiative and were the first Trust to opt into non-compulsory CQUIN target (Commissioning for Quality and Innovation) focusing on delivering improvements to patient food.  Alison led the project on behalf of the Trust alongside other key stakeholders (Councils, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Health-watch and ISS) which involved delivering a reduction in patient meal wastage.  The presentation will describe how CHFT achieved their CQUIN targets.

Andy Fox who is a nutritional therapist with over 7 years’ clinical experience.  He runs Andy Fox Nutrition and is a volunteer with Elsie’s Café, which is part of the Real Junk Food Project.

2. Launch of the Green Nurse Network

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare recently launched the Green Nurse Network in collaboration with the Royal College of Nursing, the Faculty of Heath & Human Sciences at Plymouth University and Medact. The Network draws together nurses, the biggest healthcare profession, who have an interest in sustainable nursing, both beginners and those already making changes to their practice.

4. Global companies commit to simplify food date labels by 2020

The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) – a network of 400 of the biggest consumer goods companies across 70 countries – along with Champions 12.3 has approved a Call to Action to standardise food date labels worldwide by 2020.

The Call to Action says retailers and food producers should take three important steps to simplify date labels and reduce food waste by 2020:

 5. Climate change agreements: operations manual

This manual is a guide for industry sector associations and operators of a climate change agreement (CCA).  This manual explains how to set up and manage an agreement, and how to report energy data against targets.  Amendments have been made which include: increase in fees added to the CCA operations manual; target calculator work book tool has been split in to two separate tools.

1. The Group’s 2017 sustainable food waste management conference

The Group’s 2017 conference which is sponsored by  Sharpsmart and Olleco, will be held on Thursday October 5, at the Northampton Town’s football ground in Sixfields, Northampton.

Speakers will include:

Celia Jackson from Severn Trent Waster. Celia has worked in Engineering Operations for over 30 years, moved to Severn Trent Water in 2011 taking on the role of Network Manager looking after the sewers in Birmingham and Wolverhampton areas. This built a real interest in sewer misuse and protecting our customers from blockages and flooding. Following this worked as Commercial Waste Manager controlling the discharges of waste into our sewer network with Commercial bodies. Now Project Delivery Lead in Innovation team managing projects to tackle Sewer misuse

Kevan Wallace who is the Assistant Hotel Services Manager – Catering at Frimley Park Hospital and Heatherwood Hospital Ascot part of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust in Surrey and former National Chairman of The Hospital Caterers Association. Kevan has worked in the hospitality sector for over 45 years, starting out in hotel management. He then transferred to working in contract catering, working at a wide range of organisations. For the past 26 years, he has worked in the NHS, initial at Guys Hospital and in August 1996 joined Frimley Park Hospital. A great believer in the best possible food for patients as part of their care programme, with various Government initiatives has raised the public’s awareness of the importance of hospital meals and its contribution to patient recovery and well-being.

3. Local Partnerships

Local Partnerships, which is a joint venture between  HM Treasury and the Local Government Association (LGA), delivers specialist support for a wide range of infrastructure programmes including delivering efficiencies in waste services for the north west, north east, Yorkshire and the Humber, west midlands and the east of England.

4. Introductory Guide to new Medical Device Regulations launched

The interactive guide will help new and experienced manufacturers navigate their obligations under new EU regulations on medical devices. It provides information on the new EU Regulations for Medical devices (MDR) and in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDR) including producing significantly more performance evidence, which will need to be updated throughout the life cycle of the device.

5. NHS Sustainability Roadshow- London

Join us for FREE at the first NHS Sustainability Roadshow of the 2018 Campaign. The conference will address how the NHS can take advantage of sustainable development. This includes presentations on:

  • Funding energy efficiency
  • Creating a reuse system in your estate and reducing waste
  • Utilising leadership 
  • Estate rationalisation

1. The Group’s 2017 sustainable food waste management conference

The Group’s 2017 conference which is sponsored by  Sharpsmart and Olleco, will be held on Thursday October 5, at the Northampton Town’s football ground in Sixfields, Northampton.

Speakers will include:

Sarah Wakefield from the Co-op. Sarah’s work as food sustainability manager is split into three pillars – responsible sourcing of ingredients, low resource-use manufacturing and sustainable customer choice. Her aim is to make responsible business work for people throughout the supply chain and conserve our natural resources, to ensure we have delicious healthy food choices in the future. The Co-op is the UK’s largest consumer co-operative and as a member owned ethical business has often led the way in these areas.

Vanessa Kelly who is the Executive Officer of the Northamptonshire Waste Partnership.  Vanessa works on behalf of the Districts, Boroughs and County Council of Northamptonshire as they work collaboratively to manage waste in a sustainable manner to meet the current and future needs of the Northamptonshire Communities. Her presentation will outline the work undertaken by the authorities of Northamptonshire, individually and as a Partnership to tackle and make best use of the food waste generated by householders in the county.  This will include the measures taken to reduce food waste, details of the food waste collection services offered and the government funded food waste incentive scheme which the Partnership launched in 2015.  Vanessa will provide details of the work which has been done to promote and encourage these services and the results which have been achieved.

2. Carbon Trust to run £9.2m industrial energy efficiency initiative

The four-year Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA) aims to lower costs and increase the number of available energy efficient technologies for a range of industrial sectors, through demonstration of energy-saving near to market innovations. Co-funding of between £150,000 and £1 million is available to technology developers and industrial companies.

3. Innovate UK funded workshops for low-carbon organisations

The Business Growth Hub of Innovate UK has put together a tailored programme of masterclasses designed to suit leaders, owners and managers of busy, small companies working in or supplying to the low carbon or environmental sector. The fully funded classes are designed to provide businesses with practical advice, case studies and take home tools which can be implemented immediately in their business.

5. NHS Digital destruction and disposal of sensitive data

Good Practice Guidelines version 3.2 were issued in January 2017. Section 9.5 on page 14 requires paper to be shredded onsite, prior to disposal or removal. If you have any comments on this, please send them in writing to kim.mynard@ciwm.co.uk by 13 October, 2017.

Dr Jane Gilbert from Carbon Clarity. Jane is a chartered environmentalist (CEnv) and waste management professional (MCIWM), and has been involved in the organics recycling sector for over twenty years. She is the former chief executive of the Composting Association/Association for Organics Recycling and co-founder of the European Compost Network, and is currently vice chair of the International Solid Waste Association’s Biological Treatment Working Group. She is also an active member of their Task Force on Resource Management, the European Group and Science & Technical Committee, working on the role of organics within a circular economy.

1. The Group’s 2017 sustainable food waste management conference

Speakers will include:

Mike Falconer-Hall from WRAP, who will outline The Food Waste Recycling Action Plan which represents the food waste recycling industry’s collective response to address key challenges faced. Mike joined WRAP in 2005 and has worked on a number of different programmes helping address the barriers to recover and recycle materials in the municipal, commercial and industrial waste streams. He is now the Programme Manager for WRAP’s Organics programme focussing on improving food waste collections and getting more value from food waste.

Professor Shahin Rahimifard from Loughborough University will discuss technological innovations for food waste valorisation (including the extraction of compounds from food waste streams that can be reused in new food products), across the supply chain

Shahin is from the Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technologies (SMART) at Loughborough University. His work is focused on sustainability issues within ‘Life Cycle Engineering’, including projects on sustainable product design, low carbon manufacturing, sustainable business and consumption models, product service systems, and product end-of-life management, recovery, reuse and recycling technologies.

2. Business Green Technology Awards 2017

3. SEPA consults on increasing the charges for non-compliance

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is consulting on linking compliance directly to the calculation of charges, a move that will see non-compliant operators pay more.

 3. European Council: Hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment – Council and Parliament reach a deal

The Council and the European Parliament recently reached a provisional agreement on a proposal for a revised directive concerning the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

1. Webinar on ‘Ensuring fair-play in the global health supply chains’ (August 23)

This first United Nations informal Inter Agency Task Team webinar on Sustainable Procurement in the Health Sector (SPHS) is relevant to all those active in the healthcare supply chain – from producers to purchasers. In particular, it is aimed at assisting procurement teams planning to institute sustainability initiatives to think through how they can include a wide diversity of suppliers in these sustainability initiatives. It will explain the benefits of ensuring actions which are inclusive of all, allowing small and medium enterprises to meet new standards. It will also cover supplier development and how procuring entities can engage with suppliers and manufacturers to understand the challenges they face and how they can work jointly to identify opportunities to integrate sustainability in the supply chain.

4. EU Regulation amending HP14 (ecotoxicity) published

The EU Council Regulation on HP14 has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.  The Regulation will enter into force next year on 5 July 2018.

5. Over £38 of Salix funding used to install CHP across the UK public sector

Over £38 million of Salix interest-free loans have been used for the installation of combined heat and power (CHP) to provide high efficiency heat and power generation to UK public sector buildings, bringing estimated annual savings of over £10 million on energy bills. Last year saw a record number of these Salix funded CHP projects completing, with a total of £14 million of funding utilised throughout the public sector.
