1. CIWM course on hazardous waste regulations

As of 5 July 2018, a new EU regulation implements changes for hazardous waste, including criteria for ozone depleting substances and the summation equations for acute and chronic aquatic hazards, along with wastes containing heavy metals. Changes to HP 14 ecotoxicity may well impact how your waste is classified.

5. Aqua Fund

The AquaFund is designed to support UK-based private and public sector organisations in establishing greater efficiencies in their water consumption and to help realise significant water savings. The AquaFund provides the financial assistance, resources and expertise necessary to reduce water usage and save costs, including the following:

  • Site surveys.
  • Installation and maintenance of water saving equipment.
  • Validation of water bills via Water Bureau Service.
  • Legal and admin resources to optimise tariffs.
  • Investigation of water consumption anomalies and potential leaks.
  • Monthly reports for in-depth visibility on water usage and tangible improvements.

1. The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Amendment) Regulations 2017

These Regulations amend the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 by setting new packaging waste recycling targets for paper, steel, aluminium and wood and new overall packaging waste recovery and recycling targets from 2018 to 2020. They came into force on 1 January, 2018.

3. The Sustainable Energy Europe Awards

The Sustainable Energy Europe Awards aim to promote sustainable energy by highlighting outstanding and innovative projects which have the potential to be replicated. Anyone in the EU can submit a recent project.

Winners are announced as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week which attracts media interest from across Europe. After the ceremony, a networking cocktail will be held, where Conference participants can meet the winners and runners to discuss their ideas.

A wide range of organisations are eligible to apply including private companies, public authorities, energy agencies, NGOs, cooperatives, chambers of commerce, industry and consumers associations, media, academic institutions and research and technological centres. Nominated activities, projects and actions must be ongoing, or not concluded before 30 June 2018, and carried out within the EU28.

Applications are made online. Applicants may either nominate an energy champion, or apply themselves.

Applications for the 2018 awards must have been submitted by the 23 February 2018 deadline.

2. Consultation on the decarbonisation programme in the public sector in England
 

Government is interested in evidence, and views, about the action required to deliver an ambitious decarbonisation programme across the public and higher education sectors, in England over the next 10 years.

It particularly welcomes your comments on the introduction of a voluntary emissions target for the public and higher education sector – excluding central government departments and their agencies which already have their own targets.

5. STFC Bridging for Innovators Programme – London and Manchester briefings

STFC has launched the Bridging for Innovators (B4I) funding programme to support UK Industry to improve productivity and overcome production issues. The funding forms part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), the government’s £4.7 billion support for R&D over the next four years providing significant investment for industry-led, multi-disciplinary research and business/academic collaboration. KTN’s Nigel Rix will be facilitating two Industry Briefings to cover the scope of the funding programme and details of the application process, as well as discussing the levels of funding available and the facilities on offer.

Briefings will be held on Fri, 8 December, in London  and on  Mon, 19 December, in Manchester.

3. Horizon 2020 – Fast track to innovation call open
Part of the Horizon 2020 Industrial Leadership Pillar, Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) accelerates the market uptake of ground-breaking innovations by providing funding through an open, accessible scheme that nurtures ideas from consortia of innovators of all types and sizes from across Europe.
 
FTI supports actions undertaking innovation from the demonstration stage through to market uptake, including activities such as piloting, test-beds, systems validation in real-world working conditions, validation of business models, pre-normative research, and standard-setting. FTI actions are encouraged to be interdisciplinary, cutting across different sector and technologies. Actions supporting innovative concepts that have the potential to disrupt or to create new markets are particularly welcome.

 5. Systems change thinking – creating value from unavoidable food supply chain wastes (16 January, 2018)

This is a free, one-day, event for all stakeholders interested in understanding the chemical and environmental benefits of utilising unavoidable food supply chain wastes.

Poster presentations are open for submission. The deadline for poster abstract submission is 10th December 2017. Please download the abstract template form and submit your completed form to sophie.palmer@york.ac.uk.

The Furniture Re-use Network is launching a new campaign, Buy Nothing New Day to dispel the myth that second-hand means second-best and encourage people to go to their local charity shop on Friday 24 November.  Instead of Black Friday, choose Nothing New Day.

2. Call for publications from academic and non-academics

The journal, Environments is currently running a Special Issue entitled “Innovative Processes and Technologies for the Management of Hazardous Waste”. Prof. Mentore Vaccari (University of Brescia, Italy) and Dr Terry Tudor (University of Northampton, UK) are serving as Guest Editors for this issue.

4. Waste prevention implementation fund

Up to £100,000 grants available for the implementation of waste prevention measures. The fund has been designed to help organisations overcome financial barriers to undertake a particular project with a focus on raw materials savings, carbon savings and the movement of waste material up the hierarchy.

5. CIWM East Anglian Centre – Sainsbury’s Discovery Communities in the Region – Food Waste Prevention (30 November 2017)

Sainsbury’s plc launched its ‘Waste less, Save more’ programme in 2015 to help combat the growing issue of food waste. Following an innovative 12-month trial in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, the retailer has unveiled a pioneering 10-point plan, which included a further £1 million investment to support 29 UK-wide Discovery Communities.

2. Free webinar: strategic review of charging for waste treatment sites – 29 November: 11:00am – 12:15pm

The Environment Agency is currently undertaking a Strategic Review of Charges for many sectors, these will include changes to the approach for all waste treatment sites.  CIWM is pleased to be able to host a webinar with panellist Paul Fernee, Senior Advisor from the Environment Agency introducing these changes.  He will be explaining the approach behind the changes, the new charging structure and answering some of your questions.

3. Organisations required for the Group’s student experience programme

The Group is looking for organisations that would be willing to support a student for its ‘2-day work experience’ programme. The programme is now in its third year, and previously has been undertaken with various organisations including SRCL, Bywaters and Grundon, with positive feedback both from the students and the organisations. It offers the opportunity to facilitate the entry of students/future employees into the sector. The expenses for the students’ travel, accommodation and subsistence will be paid by the Group, using monies generated from its seminars. 4. Climate change in the UK: What will be the impact on health, mortality and frontline NHS services?

A joint event hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Health Group, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change, the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, and the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change.

“Climate change isn’t just hurting the planet – it’s a public health emergency.” That’s the conclusion of Christiana Figueres, Chair of the Lancet Countdown, who published a report on 31 October 2017 which has shone a light on the damaging impacts that climate change is having on our health. In order to discuss this public health crisis in further detail – and to explore what we can do about it – we have teamed up with the Lancet Countdown, the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change and the APPG on Health, in order to host a panel discussion on the impact of climate change and health.

5. Innovate UK Innovation loans

Innovation loans are a financial product offered by Innovate UK. They are for UK businesses that want to scale up and grow through innovation, developing new or improved products, processes or services.

Through innovation loans, Innovate UK aims to give businesses support to gain the competitive edge and also grow the UK economy. Loans may be offered where a business can demonstrate they are suitable and eligible.

They are for late-stage research and development (R&D) projects only. A late-stage R&D project is one which builds on a new idea but has not yet reached the point of commercialisation.

2. Consultation on the proposed Control of Mercury (Enforcement) Regulations 2017

This consultation seeks views on the government’s proposed approach to implementing the requirements of EU Regulation 2017/852 on Mercury, which will be contained within the Control of Mercury (Enforcement) Regulations 2017.  The consultation will be of particular interest to those involved in the export of waste mercury; hospitals and dental practitioners; operators providing temporary or permanent storage of waste mercury; operators interested in mercury waste management, specifically in the conversion and solidification of waste mercury; and other areas.

If you wish to respond please reply to either Kim Mynard (kim.mynard@ciwm.co.uk) or Tina Benfield (tina.benfield@ciwm.co.uk), by 16 November at the very latest to enable all comments to be collated and submitted to Defra before the deadline.

5. Free workshops to help staff save money and be greener

Energy Saving Trust and Home Energy Scotland – in partnership with Zero Waste Scotland – are delivering workplace-based workshops to help employees understand how best to
reduce food waste at work as they become more attuned to sustainable behaviour.  The Scottish Government-funded courses are free, and tailored to fit in with your organisation’s needs; they’re run at a venue, time and length that suit you and your staff.
