1. Half day workshop on remanufacturing/repair/reuse and single use in the healthcare sector

This half-day workshop which is sponsored by Grundon Waste Management Ltd, will focus on the remanufacturing/repair/reuse of bulky items, as well as the effective management of single use items in healthcare facilities. There will be short presentations from Alan Armstrong from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, and Karl Sheehan from Sharpsmart. Following the presentations, there will be the opportunity for discussion and the sharing of information. These discussions will be facilitated by Anne Woolridge and Maria Mahon. A light lunch will be served at the end.

3. New £10m manufacturing and materials readiness Innovation Loans

Innovate UK is to offer up to £10 million in loans to SMEs for innovative manufacturing or materials projects.  The aim of this competition is to provide loans to help SMEs increase manufacturing readiness.  Innovation loans will offer affordable, patient, flexible, repayable funding for later-stage research & development projects with a clear route to commercial success.

The competition scope will cover innovations in:

  • manufacturing systems, technologies or processes, and/or
  • materials development, properties, integration or reuse.

4. Veolia launches organics trading platform

Veolia UK has launched a trading platform for waste wood and organic materials including green and food waste.

The waste management company said that the trading platform – www.biotrading.co.uk – will allow sellers to “get a good price for their product and gain maximum value from their waste and process by-products”. And, Veolia claimed that Biotrading is the first UK online marketplace for organic resources.

5. Remain within REACH, says Environmental Policy Forum

According to the Environmental Policy Forum (a network of UK environmental professional bodies), the effective regulation of chemicals is critical for the economy, public health, environmental protection, the economy and animal welfare and ending the UK’s involvement in the EU chemical framework REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) could have serious consequences.
