1. The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Amendment) Regulations 2017

These Regulations amend the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 by setting new packaging waste recycling targets for paper, steel, aluminium and wood and new overall packaging waste recovery and recycling targets from 2018 to 2020. They came into force on 1 January, 2018.

2. Half day workshop on remanufacturing/repair/reuse and single use in the healthcare sector

This half-day workshop which is sponsored by Grundon Waste Management Ltd, will focus on the remanufacturing/repair/reuse of bulky items, as well as the effective management of single use items in healthcare facilities. There will be short presentations from Alan Armstrong from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, and Karl Sheehan from Sharpsmart. Following the presentations, there will be the opportunity for discussion and the sharing of information. These discussions will be facilitated by Anne Woolridge and Maria Mahon. A light lunch will be served at the end.

3. The Sustainable Energy Europe Awards

The Sustainable Energy Europe Awards aim to promote sustainable energy by highlighting outstanding and innovative projects which have the potential to be replicated. Anyone in the EU can submit a recent project.

Winners are announced as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week which attracts media interest from across Europe. After the ceremony, a networking cocktail will be held, where Conference participants can meet the winners and runners to discuss their ideas.

A wide range of organisations are eligible to apply including private companies, public authorities, energy agencies, NGOs, cooperatives, chambers of commerce, industry and consumers associations, media, academic institutions and research and technological centres. Nominated activities, projects and actions must be ongoing, or not concluded before 30 June 2018, and carried out within the EU28.

Applications are made online. Applicants may either nominate an energy champion, or apply themselves.

Applications for the 2018 awards must have been submitted by the 23 February 2018 deadline.

5. The Group’s training workshop 2

The Group’s second workshop for 2018 will be held on Wednesday September 19, in Sheffield. It will focus on waste classification. More details to follow.
