April at Mission Motorsport

Volunteering is going from strength to strength with Mission Motorsport. One of the beneficiaries came in to talk to our Level 5 Occupational Therapy Students, sharing his experiences and discussing how the University’s Occupational Therapy team have helped. To prepare for the day, one of the students and I had met the beneficiary and this enabled to the student to be able to deliver part of the session herself to her peers and share her experiences.

Comments from students:

” Massive help for the assignment, really enjoyed having a visitor come and share their real life story and
put it into context”

” I really appreciated hearing his story. it gave me a greater insight into the challenges someone has living
with a condition.”

A full environment assessment and functional assessment was carried out with another beneficiary.
The occupational therapy students had an opportunity to be involved in the assessment process and make
recommendations to help improve health and well-being.

Occupational Therapy Support from the University of Northampton

Occupational Therapists from The University of Northampton have been supporting us since the Autumn of 2015, but in 2015, funding was received from the University to free up 20 days of a Senior Occupational Therapist’s time so they can support MM beneficiaries.

Their role is to work with us and our beneficiaries by providing OT support, whilst also giving OT students from the University of Northampton the chance to get involved and apply what they learn at uni in the real world.
To date, 13 beneficiaries have been formally helped (with countless more having received advice at our events), covering things from wheelchair assessments to mental health support.

They’ve been with us at MMHQ, in the MM Heritage Workshop, and they even ventured to Anglesey with us in November for the Race of Remembrance. The OT team have become hugely important members of the MM team, and we can’t thank them or the University of Northampton enough!
