A Mixed Methods approach
This research project adopts a Mixed Methods (MM) Concurrent Triangulation design to address the research questions. The quantitative strand focuses on the magnitude, frequency and relationships between the variables while the qualitative strand explores these relationships, contextualising the reasons and mechanisms behind them to corroborate findings. This process is further enhanced by the Student Research Panel (SRP) contribution to the interpretation stage, which will add to a more holistic understanding to inform action. MM affords the flexibility to oscillate between data forms and analysis to develop more comprehensive understandings of UON students’ views and priorities in critical thinking skills development in their disciplines.
Our collaborative approach
Involving a Student Research Panel (SRP) in this project is innovative because it transforms the research process into a collaborative effort that directly involves the primary stakeholders—students. The SRP is actively involved in surveying student perceptions, needs and priorities on critical thinking skills development, researching existing resources for critical thinking skills development, and brainstorming/co-creating resources to meet identified student needs. This method not only enhances the relevance and effectiveness of the resources developed but also empowers students and fosters a sense of ownership and investment in the outcomes and brings fresh perspectives towards meaningful learning experiences for students. Our shared experience will help staff to improve their mentoring, coaching and facilitation skills and gain a more realistic understanding of students’ diverse needs.
