School A Designer: Merissa Lam

Student researchers created a job description and a person specification for the recruitment of a designer to work with them and design a well-being tool from their findings, and Merissa Lam was recruited to the project. Merissa’s role was to listen to the children and use their ideas and findings to inform the designs for a well-being tool of their choice.

Merissa’s biography:

Merissa‚Äôs career in design began after she graduated from the University of Creative Arts Surrey with a BA honors in Printed Textile Design. Following this, she spent 15 years in the fashion industry, where she worked in product design as well as brand identity and strategy.  Her experience ranges from high street names such as ASOS.com and Boden to international retailers and startup businesses.

Her children’s arrival prompted her to take some time off for self-development. During this time her focus was on improving her digital design abilities using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign which she used to start a small company creating and selling gifts and stationery.  She now wholesales these throughout the UK.

With a desire to broaden her knowledge Merissa recently completed a master’s degree in Sustainable Design at Kingston University.  She is currently working on a self-initiated game design project aimed at communicating food sustainability to children.
