Dr Emma Whewell

Emma joined the University of Northampton in 2006 as part of the Initial Teacher Training team. She is currently the Programme Leader of the BA Sports Development and Physical Education degree. Whilst working here she has completed her MA in Education focusing on the teaching of children classed as vulnerable. She has completed her PhD on the formation of identity in newly qualified teachers. Emma is a member of the Primary Physical Education European Network group and the All Party Parliamentary Group for a fit and healthy childhood. She is also involved in the eTwinning projects and DLAB2: Developing Changemakers an Erasmus+ project. This involves working with schools and universities in five European countries to improve access to and usage of mobile technology including AR and VR 

Dr Helen Caldwell

Helen is an Associate Professor at the University of Northampton where she is a specialist in educational technology, teacher education and online learning. She is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a National Executive Committee Officer for the subject association Technology and Pedagogy in Education Association (TPEA). Her role at the University of Northampton involves leading the Online MA Education, the PGCE Top Up and the PG Cert in Digital Leadership. Helen has considerable experience of international project work and has been the research lead on nine funded projects, the most recent of which are two 3-year Erasmus+ projects on the theme of Digital Learning across Boundaries. Helen’s research interests include technology-enabled social online learning in teacher education, changemakers and social innovation education and the use of immersive technologies for teaching and learning.

Helen Tiplady

Helen joined the University of Northampton in September 2019 after teaching for  15 years in primary education where she was also an  Assistant Head of a large primary school in Milton Keynes. Amongst other projects, she led her school in implementing Restorative Practices as a way to resolve conflicts.

 She is now a member of the Initial Teacher Training team and is currently the Module Leader for all the science courses (which has involved designing and delivering a brand new 30-credit Year 3 module in Expertise teaching)  as well as teaching on Research Practitioner modules. Helen’s research interests include the importance of life skills for primary school children and  how memory and metacognition skills aid their learning. She is an avid fan of Victoria Wood, walking in the Scottish Highlands, black labradors  and marmite on crumpets.

Richard Byles

Richard Byles is a Learning Technologist at the University of Northampton, his background is in media production and web site design and he has experience as a technical demonstrator and lecturer in these fields. 

His previous research has been presented at conferences and has been published by the Journal of Learning Development in HE as a paper.

Beth Garrett

Beth is currently an postgraduate student and researcher at the University of Northampton. She completed her BA degree in Primary Education, specialising in Physical Education. From here, she is currently working towards an MA in Education. Having studied both degree at the University of Northampton, Beth has been able to engage with research, joining the Erasmus+ funded DLAB2 project in 2019 and continuing work as part of the DLAB research team. Tom Briggs

Tom completed his PGCE in 2007, teaching mathematics in two secondary schools over the following seven years before taking on the role of Education Officer and then Learning Manager at the Bletchley Park museum and heritage site. Now, another seven years later, pandemic-induced redundancy has given him the push he needed to go freelance, concentrating on maths teaching and learning consultancy work straddling the Education and Heritage sectors. Academically, having completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Leadership he is now working towards an MA in Education with the University of Northampton.
