Final report

Title of Project: Reflections on practice co-created by experts and novices using video collaboration software.

Project Leader: Dr Emma Whewell

This report is intended to provide an opportunity to reflect on your project, with an emphasis on impact (actual and potential) and also on the process itself.  It will be used to inform future developments in learning and teaching stemming from the project and the development of the Innovation Funds generally.  Thank you for your work on the project and we look forward to helping you disseminate and build on your findings.

Please return the completed report, either using this form, or if you prefer as a video or audio file, to Marie Graham (marie.graham@northampton.ac.uk) by 30th June 2021.  Please also make a copy of the report available on your project blog in your preferred format.

  1. Briefly describe your project, with particular reference to the impact on learning and teaching practice – yours, your colleagues and for the wider university. This could be immediate or potential impact.

  • This project will improve the student learning experience by producing co-created materials that will enhance teaching and learning through video and audio resources and dialogues that can be used to scaffold synchronous and asynchronous ABL activities across a range of university programmes.

  • This project has the potential to change practice by offering a realistic and effective method of remotely engaging in the assessment of work-based placements such as teaching practices.

  • The project creates materials that model effective reflective practice which has the potential to change approaches to professional dialogues across a range of disciplines.

  • This bid has the potential to change placement based assessment opportunities, mentoring and the international remit of the university provision.

  1. Describe how you have, or intend to, disseminate your findings. What would help you with this activity?

We have completed/ have been accepted to complete a number of dissemination activities:

  1. March 2021 UK Ed Chat- Pre recorded 20 minute conference presentation with live Question and Answer session
  2. Kaleidoscope 2021 18th Annual Kaleidoscope Conference at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge 3 – 4 June 2021- 15 minute presentation by one of our Postgraduate Researchers.
  3. Land T Conference – University of Northampton- Poster presentation 15th June 2021
  4. Annual Research Conference – University of Northampton- 20 minute presentation- 17th June 2021
  5. ECER September 2021- Oral presentation.
  • We will also prepare a range of teaching resources to be disseminated across ITT
  • We will be writing a case study for IRIS Connect
  • The project blog has been updated regularly and houses our outputs as well https://mypad.northampton.ac.uk/cocreate/
  1. Please reflect on the research process. What was most enjoyable and interesting about it? What barriers if any did you encounter? What would have made the project easier to complete? How did the mentoring relationship help and what would make it more useful in future?
  • This has been a challenging project to complete in the timescale, mainly due to the face to face restrictions in schools. This meant that our videos are not fully representative of the pedagogies expected in schools. We do however have a diverse range of teaching approaches modelled.
  • The use of the IRIS platform has been really interesting and sparked lots of ideas of how this can be further developed.
  • The extended time scale for 21-22 will be most useful in terms of allowing time outside of teaching terms to work.
  • The mentoring relationship has been really helpful, it has given an outside perspective, ringfenced time and advice built from experience. Perhaps a series of shorter meetings would be more beneficial.

  1. What other reflections on the project do you have that will make the scheme better for participants and the university community?
  • A series of workshops to support project leads on the processes, for example, recruitment of researchers.
  • An opportunity for post graduate researchers to meet and work together
  • The faculty accountants and Unitemps to attend a workshop to support
