Everyone returns to school…

Our participants returned to full time face to face teaching this week as the primary schools in England welcome back all their pupils.

As a reminder we have put together this prompt sheet for our participants.

Thank you for agreeing to be a participant in the IrisConnect project, we are so grateful for your support. This sheet is intended to be a crib sheet to help you navigate the next half term and to make your contribution as simple as possible.
The findings of the initial survey to all the ITT students suggest that the combinations of pedagogical approaches and subjects below will be the most beneficial for your peers. These are just suggestions and we recognise that our approach requires flexibility, so we will be happy to use any of your contributions.

Subjects: English, Maths, Science, Foundation subject of your choice

Pedagogical approaches: Managing behaviour effectively, Teaching children with additional needs, Assessment for learning, Use of support staff, Teacher modelling.

What do I need to do now?
Over the remaining weeks of your placement we would ask that you identify opportunities to film face to face teaching or online teaching, it would be advisable to look at the combinations above and use these to plan. We are ideally looking for you to try and do 3 or 4 filming episodes of a maximum 5 minutes.
A few practice attempts for volume, clarity and range are advised.
So that you are not thinking about starting or stopping the recording it might be advisable to start the recording at the beginning of your lesson and leave it rolling. This means you will not have to think about the camera and when you watch it back you might be able to cover several the combinations above by editing the video into clips.
By filming through the Iris app it will directly record into your profile.
NB – If you are teaching online please set up your device no more than 1m away and ensure we can see both you and your screen. If you are teaching face to face, set up your device in the most appropriate place so that you can be seen teaching, the children can be seen responding and we can hear you all clearly.

After you have filmed your contribution/ contributions…
Save them with a clear label that demonstrates the combination that you have chosen e.g year 5 maths behaviour management
We do not mind if you tag them straight away or film them all then spend some time tagging them later. The final date for all our videos to be in and mentor dialogues to happen is April 12th. Please make them available to all members of the project team when you look at privacy settings – Emma, Helen C, Helen T, Richard, Thomas and Beth (and your mentor if they are involved in the project).
As you watch the video back you can automatically add your time stamps by adding comments in the comment box. If you have children’s faces, please anonymise the videos using the cartoon effect.
NB – If you are struggling to do any of the editing, tagging, etc please ask for help from one of the team or use the live chat function on the Iris website.

Expert and novice dialogues…
If you have a mentor (expert) who is involved in the project, then your next step will be to record your professional dialogue.
Please use Iris’s screen record function if you are working remotely and record your online video call, or as a face to face interview if you are at school together – you should upload these to Iris, also carefully labelled so we can track the videos.
If you do not have a school mentor then one of the project team will take on the expert role – please contact Emma when you think you are ready to have your dialogues and we will assign an expert.
Ask your expert to watch the video in advance of your meeting and they should add their own tags.
Start your recording – You should then watch the video together discussing the observations you have both made about the pedagogical technique you are demonstrating. You can pause the video for a discussion about strengths and areas for development, perhaps your mentor would have done it differently or has a suggestion for you.
This would have a similar feel to how you might approach a lesson observation feedback – you just have the video to prompt you both.

Finally…
I understand that was a lot of information, you know that you can contact me with any questions. We will be analysing the dialogues between you and your expert and using these for a research paper and we will be using the videos to produce a set of resources for ITT students. There is a consent form accompanying this document for you to sign and return to me. Remember the beauty of this technology is you only need choose what you want to use and talk about – you can keep all your bloopers!!
