Design Brief

“DETAIL” – BA Interior Design

3DD3018 14|15 Final Major Project 1 (Research)

3DD3019 14|15 Final Major Project 2 (Design)

Introduction

This project is the most important assignment of your course. You become project managers by selecting your site, your degree of intervention, your architectural programme and your interior design rationale. It runs through two different modules 3DD3018 that engages you with development via research and 3DD3019 that marks the final design solution.

Assignment Analysis

The project starts with a selection of a site appropriate in nature and scale to afford your interventions. This can be local, national or international. You are responsible for acquiring all necessary material for the development of your project including site plans, technical drawings and photographs. You are encouraged to make site visits and document the site using various media. You will be introduced to advanced research methods and you are expected to creatively adapt those in your processes. After site and precedents research, you will start developing your concept and mapping the layout of your intervention. As the project develops your proposal will be refined and made gradually more solid leading to a credible solution that responds to the socio-economical as well as innovation prospects of the contemporary design world. You are expected to produce three key outputs for 3DD3018: A Technical Report Booklet and two Research Sketchbooks. The output expected for 3DD3019 will be your final Degree Show exhibition material.

Expectations

By the end of this project in context of 3DD3018 you will be able to:

  • Understand and apply modern design philosophy through a substantive personally initiated final major project (FMP)
  • Apply design practice through the research, analysis application and presentation of a realistic self-initiated final major project report
  • Understand and apply creativity and personal responsibility in a modern design context.
  • Analyse problems, synthesize, evaluate and plan for the implementation of solutions using knowledge of the properties and applications of a broad range of materials.
  • Evaluate solutions through the application of economic principles
  • Analyse and make critical judgments on the range of models produced during the FMP – to demonstrate the various technical aspects of the design, present a comprehensive document which justifies the decisions taken during the evolution of the FMP, and supporting visual material
  • Identify problems and develop strategic and tactical schemes for the development of solutions.
  • Analyse problems, synthesise, evaluate and plan for the implementation of solutions including contingency plans for anticipated difficulties
  • Gain confidence discussing technical issues related to creative design through tutorial/seminar discussions, and further improve research report writing and professional communication skills.

By the end of this project in context of 3DD3019 you will be able to:

  • Illustrate a comprehensive understanding and application of modern design through substantive personally initiated final major project, developing 2D and 3D realizations, with due regard to materials and costs.
  • A professional knowledge of design practise through the research, analysis application and presentation of a realistic self-initiated final major project, including I.T. and integrating technical principles
  • Demonstrate inter-personal skills and apply them within the context of a designer’s creative role and personal responsibility in a modern design, with an understanding of communication and creativity through personally initiated practical project work, working to a tight time schedule.
  • Research, identify and analyse specific problems to produce realistic detailed design solutions.
  • Ability to select and apply materials to a design solution in an appropriate creative, commercial and technical scenario
  • Practical experience in new product presentation at concept and final proposal o clients and peers, this will include 2D flatwork and 3D sketch and highly detailed finished models.
  • Analyse problems and identify a range of solutions whilst being innovative in the use of different media, creative thinking and experimentation
  • Presentation of information effectively for a particular purpose
  • Ability to make critical judgements in relationship to own work and that of others.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria confirm that students satisfactorily achieve the learning outcomes of this module is 100% coursework.

By the end of this project in context of 3DD3018 you must demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence in:

  • Understanding the holistic nature of design through meeting creative, commercial and technical requirements within a personally initiated design project.
  • Professional presentation of fully realised design solutions with appropriately specified materials and with due consideration to cost.
  • Critical analysis, evaluation and presentation of initial concept and detailed final design solution within a logical and comprehensively documented context.

By the end of this project in context of 3DD3019 you must demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence in:

  • Understanding the holistic nature of design through meeting creative, commercial and technical requirements within a personally initiated design project.
  • Professional presentation of fully realised design solutions with appropriately specified materials and with consideration of the project feasibility and maintenance.
  • Critical analysis, evaluation and presentation of initial concept and detailed final design solution within a logical and comprehensively documented context.

SUBMISSION and ASSESSMENT MODE: You will be asked to submit the following material to successfully complete this project:

 In context of 3DD3018

(A) Two Research Sketchbooks (1 physical + 1 digital journal) professionally labelled and laid out, containing:

  1. Site mapping and research outcomes using appropriate design language and expression techniques (observations, notes in text, diagrams, photographs, quantitative and qualitative data);
  2. Precedents Research with visual and textual reference appropriately cited;
  3. Concept development (Sketching, Painting, Collage etc.);
  4. Primary and intermediate design proposals.

(B) A Technical Report Booklet, professionally designed containing:

  1. An overview of your project;
  2. Effective Analysis of your site and proposed interventions justified appropriately;
  3. Narrative of critical decisions and analysis of your development visually and textually;
