Smalls self manufacture 1.0

Using the four axis milling machine a number of test models were cut out to see if the cnc was able to cut to detail and finish either to represent the final product or act as positive mould for silicon moulding. Unfortunatly the finish and detail were not good enough for either. Even with a number of coats of spray paint the finish was not smooth enough.

Laser cut acrylic was used for both the feet and belly pieces – the feet fit perfectly however the calculations made for the belly pieces were incorrect (A glue gun nozzle was used as a strip bender) and casting would be near impossible. With this in mind I went back and redesigned the the collectible character models to make self and mass manufacture easier and stronger.

Below are a number of developments made to logo shown previously – The colour scheme and the tag line are still to be decided. The shapes are based on the shapes of the collectible characters and the console characters. Any thoughts or favorites?

A copy of all the logo developed so far have been be sent to the NDCS Northamptonshire group to get feedback and suggestions from the actual users, as a group they selected a logo which is shown on the image below. This is their feedback on their selected logo:

After exploring the initial logo ideas shown below one has finally been chosen to represent the product. The name ENHANCE has been chosen to represent the console as a whole as the console helps to enhance communication methods and also the relationship between hearing and hearing impaired family members and friends.logo

The image below shows the current standing for the final design of the whole product!
– The main console – House games console technology and also motion tracking technology that are adapted to help parents and children learn sign language in a collaborative and enriching way.
– The Collectible RFID figures – Houses a small RFID chip that activates and gives the user access to exclusive data and games when in contact with the console.
– Band controllers – House point of reference and haptic feedback technology. Act as a point of reference for the motion tracking software.

The main issue faced with the controllers at this stage was to ensure the technology housed within the soft band body would be secure and protected without effecting the fit, comfort and manufacture. This issue has been overcome by the inclusion of plastic housing to be inserted during the casting of the band itself – this enables the technology to be protected and mean the curing process of the casting band helps to secure the technology into place.

The idea behind this band structure was decided after a phone conversation with Jonathan Thorpe the MD of John cranes toys who suggested two types of way to manufacture bands of this type.

Technical considerations have been made to the collectible characters

The collectible characters all house the same RFID chip and all interact with the console in the same way. Because of this the only alterations that needed to be made to ensure the technology would work seamlessly were:
– All of the characters feet need to be the same size and have the same foot print in order to fit into the hold in the consoles hands.
– One leg of the characters has been hollowed out with enough space to hold the RFID chip.
