How do we get the resources we need in the Library? An investigation into the selection and ordering of resources for reading lists at the University of Northampton

Abstract:
This presentation will highlight the exciting and original research undertaken by a collective group, spanning three different LLS teams, who have come together to investigate how, when and why academic staff, throughout the various schools, order resources for their reading lists and courses. Feeding back results from a short survey and focus groups, the research team will forward and field from conference colleagues, suggested improvements to our services to aid academics and enhance the students’ learning experience.

Presenter: Gillian Siddall
I am an Academic Librarian at the University of Northampton, working with the School of Health. I deliver integrated teaching and learning programmes in information skills for students and academic staff. I have worked in libraries in Further and Higher Education Since 2007. I have a BA(Hons) in Comparative American Studies from the University of Warwick. I have an MA in Information and Library Management from Loughborough University. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and I am a member of the Libraries for Nursing committee, a subgroup of Health Libraries Group.

Presenter: Katie Llewellyn
I am a Customer Service Supervisor and Information Assistant at the University of Northampton. I help manage the helpdesk staff at both Library campuses alongside assisting the Academic Librarians in processing book orders and managing collections. I have worked in libraries in Further and Higher Education Since 2004, starting as support staff before progressing to my current position. I have a BA in English from the University of Leicester and a PGCE in primary education.
Presenter: Cleo Cameron
I work as an Information Assistant in the Resource Management Team within LLS but also have a sideline as an Associate Lecturer in English Literature, and I have taught here at The University of Northampton for seven years, while also undertaking teaching at Oxford Brookes. I gained my BA in English Literature from The University of Northampton and received a Masters degree in Eighteenth-Century Studies from Warwick. I am currently in the write-up year of my PhD conducted at the University of Northampton and my research involves a two-pronged focus: firstly a redefinition of Radical Enlightenment, and secondly how English Literature at the end of the eighteenth century fits into and expresses this redefined concept.

Presenter: Christine Dale
I am the Acquisitions Manger at the University of Northampton. I have worked in various roles (frontline and supervisory) within the library since 1989 gaining a good insight into both the needs of the students and staff. My present role is to lead the team acquiring and processing learning resources (physical and virtual), manage access to materials not held by the university, including inter-library loans and to liaise with a range of suppliers and subscription agents. I have substantial knowledge of the way agents/publishers work and how we can secure resources, obtaining best value for money for the institution.
Presenter: Janet Milner
A qualified, Chartered Librarian, I am currently the Cataloguing/Metadata Specialist at the library at the University of Northampton. I lead a team that is responsible for the accuracy and tidiness of the entries on the library catalogue, for our acquired resources. I am also closely involved in the work of the University Institutional Repository (NECTAR). Having worked at the library since 1997, I have substantial knowledge and experience of issues around successful resource discovery, both print and digital, by our users.
